PlayPen Playwrights is an 18 month-long residency for experienced playwrights who seek dramaturgical help, collegial fellowship, and the participation of directors and actors as they develop scripts for the stage. The program will take place in the PlayPen at Central Square Theater in Central Square, Cambridge. For the 2010-2012 Session, PlayPen Playwrights will consist of six playwrights: Robert Boulrice, Deborah Fortson, Amy Merrill, Cliff Odle, Monica Raymond, and Joyce Van Dyke.
For the current 18-month session, Amy Merrill and Robert Boulrice will serve as curators and oversee the program.
Playwrights will meet twice monthly – primarily at Central Square Theater - presenting their projects and getting feedback from fellow playwrights and Artistic Directors of Central Square Theater’s resident companies, The Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater.
Each playwright will benefit from two readings of their work-in-progress – one in-house, one a public performance. Each playwright also receives a 4-play subscription for Central Square Theater’s 2010-2011 Season, and a 6-play Subscription for the 2011-2012 Season.
PlayPen Playwrights is a first step in making Central Square Theater an important destination for theater writers. Once this program is up and running, other programs might include: commissioning playwrights to write plays about Cambridge life and history, Write a Play and Produce it in 24 hours, Playwright-in-Residence, Visiting International Artists, Playwrights’ Week, and participating in city-wide new works festivals.
